Calcite Crystal Grouping rare locality Blackjack Mine Jo Daviess County Illinois 13.5cm USA3
Large lustrous Calcite crystal grouping from a rare Illinois USA locality. The blocky rhombic crystals are arranged in parallel growth and range up to 3cm in size. They feature good transparency and luster. Many of the Calcite crystals have striated faces. Associated with the Calcite are some micro-Galena crystals. The display face is in excellent condition with the crystals having sharp edges. On the reverse sides there two attachment points from removal. The Calcite fluoresces a pale pink under long wave UV light. From an unusual locality rarely seen on the market the Blackjack (Marsden lode; Marsden's diggings; Peru Mine), Galena, Galena Mining District, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA. 1854-60 IT OPERATED AS A LEAD MINE; AND AS A ZINC MINE UNTIL 1883. REOPENED IN 1907 BUT CLOSED IN 1908. NEW JERSEY ZINC OPENED IT IN 1913 AND OPERATED IT ON A LARGE SCALE UNTIL 1 MAR 1927. Production ceased in 1954. Source USGS ID 10106444
